Lesson 7 - Putting two words together


2. Putting two words together                        Two words put together are called compounds, many of which are written as one word without a hyphen. However, there are compounds that are usually written with a hyphen. These are two words that function as adjectives found before the word they modify. It categorize by 4 these are:



  • Compound written as one
              boyfriend                boardroom               postgraduate
                  firsthand                standby                     steamboat
                  takeover                 landholder               weekend
                  wellbeing               chairperson              jawbone
                  saleslady                postman                   boatswain

  • Compound written with a hyphen

              un-American                             counter-revolutionary
                  re-creation                               ex-wife
                  non-interference                      mother-in-law
                  hang-gliding                              left-handed
                  awkward-looking                     a well-known writer
                  four-year course                      fifty-five


  • Compounds written as two separate words
              first aid                                bank card
                  base line                              bell tower
                  best man                             cable car
                  cash flow                             chain letter
                   day school                           dish towel
                  egg roll                                 eye contact
                   fair play                               fast track


  • Two-words verbs
              backbite                                          backfire
              cablecast                                         catcall
                  forgo                                               foreclose
                  overdo                                             uphold
                  overlook                                          handpick
